elcome to the Destry Allen Memorial website, dedicated to the life and times of Destry Greer Allen. Destry was seventeen years old, between his junior and senior years at Salina Central High School in Salina, Kansas, when he was found dead from a gunshot wound on the morning of June 10, 2004.
Destry’s parents used to watch a lot of old movies. Jimmy Stewart, whose on-screen characters typically were men of honor, was a favorite of the Allens and came to influence their choice of names for two of the three Allen boys.
Destry Rides Again was a popular Western comedy spoof written about Thomas Jefferson Destry. In the 1939 version, Jimmy Stewart stars as Destry, the son of a legendary frontier peacekeeper who is hired as the new deputy to tame a lawless town – but he doesn’t carry a gun. Predictably enough, he prevails in the end. Unfortunately, in Destry Allen’s version of Destry Rides Again, the bad guys did carry a gun and have won – at least for the time being.
